CHAPTER 15

Leo

LATER THAT NIGHT, my body tensed as I lay in bed, my brain somewhere between asleep and awake.

I opened one eye to glance at my bedside clock.

Two am?

I’d hit my bed around midnight. Right after I’d gotten myself off in the shower because being so damn close to Macy was making me completely insane.

Fuck!

I wanted to get her naked like I wanted to take my next breath, but since I wanted more than just sexual gratification, I knew better than to push her too hard.

I wouldn’t trade those moments when she melted into my arms, but feeling that shapely body pressed against mine was getting to me, even though I kept telling myself to be patient.

I opened my other eye, wondering what the hell had woken me up.

I slept light from years of being out in the field, but I was usually out until I had to get up unless I heard or felt something that wasn’t quite right.

I’d heard something…

My muscles clenched tighter as I heard the sound of my bedroom door slowly closing.

Is that what had woken me up? The opening of the door to my room?

The light was dim, the only illumination the moonlight in the room coming from the windows. As I turned my head, I realized the bedroom was just bright enough to see Macy’s small form crossing the room, heading in a beeline for my large, king-size bed.

I not only recognized her small form, but the sleep shorts and oversized top she wore to bed. I’d seen them in the laundry several times.

I was facing away from the vacant side of the bed, but I could feel it as she climbed in, fought a little with the covers, and then moved as close to me as she could get without actually touching me.

So maybe I had initially been hoping that she couldn’t handle another night in my house without being in my bed burning up the sheets with me, but it didn’t take me long to realize that definitely wasn’t the case.

I could hear her rapid breathing right behind me, and the vibration of her violent trembling.

I rolled over to face her immediately. “Macy? What’s wrong?” I asked, trying to be as calm as possible, which wasn’t easy since I wanted to make whatever had upset or scared her instantly disappear.

“I-I’m sorry,” she answered, her body still shaking. “I didn’t want to wake you up.”

I reached out, pulled her into my body, and wrapped my arms around her. “What happened, sweetheart?”

Macy and I had been sharing this house for weeks now, and she’d never once felt the need to sleep anywhere except her guest room down the hall.

She snuggled up against me like she was trying to get warm as she answered, “B-bad dream. I haven’t had one for a while, and I just reacted. I didn’t want to be alone.”

My gut ached with the knowledge that her first reaction had been to come to me, that she fucking trusted me that much.
